Why I wrote this book

Hear my heart behind The 5 Habits, and why helping parents navigate technology with clarity and confidence matters more than ever.

THE RESEARCH

The research proves we need to act now

Evidence-based insights that help explain why guiding kids through technology matters.

Early smartphone acquisition can lead to negative health outcomes.

A 2025 study from researchers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in collaboration with researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and Columbia University in New York, found that owning a smartphone in early adolescence is associated with increased risks of depression, obesity, and insufficient sleep compared to not owning a smartphone. For youth who own a smartphone, the earlier age of acquisition is linked to higher rates of obesity and insufficient sleep (link)

79% of young people encountered violent porn.

A report from the UK Children’s Commissioner that surveyed 1,000 young people aged 16-21 showed 79% had encountered violent porn before the age of 18. Frequent users of pornography are more likely to engage in physically aggressive sex acts (link).

MRIs reveal changes in children’s brain size associated with screen use.

A growing body of evidence has found that teen brains can be structurally changed by spending long spans of time playing games, watching videos, and engaging in other activities on digital screens (i.e., “screen time”). Now, a study led by experts at Cincinnati Children’s reports that high amounts of screen time can affect brain growth and development at much earlier ages (link).
